The official quote from the shoe-thrower is, “This is a gift from the Iraqis, this is the farewell kiss, you dog.”
As has been noted by TheEngineer2008 at Digg, “Displaying the soles of one’s shoes is considered a deep insult in much of the Arab world.” And, of course, we all remember how that statue of Saddam Hussein was beaten with sandals by Iraqis when it was toppled on April 9, 2003.
Still, though, a part of me secretly hopes it will turn out to be either a Borat stunt — or a reaction to Bush’s tap-dancing.
